There were many quotes in this poem that had a clear meaning. For example, " The Moon shines bright/ In time of night", is clearly saying that since the moon reflects off the sun, it's color is bright in the dark night. The quote, "Samuel anoints/ Whom God appoints", is a biblical reference that wouldn't be used in present day. That's because there are so many different religions and beliefs that I don't think a children's book would include God's name. These quotes had an impact on me while reading the poem. They showed the difference between what was appropriate in the 1600's compared to present day.
A few of the lines in this poem made me reflect on my own life experiences and question the author. For example the quote, "Rachel doth mourn/ For her first born", made me question the meaning. I was wondering whether the mother had a miscarriage or if she was mourning because she didn't want the child? The quote, "A Dog will bite/ A thief at night", reminded me of the time my dog bit me. Although I wasn't a thief, he was very protective of my mom and when I touched her he freaked out.
