I enjoyed the fairy tale Molly Whuppie by Joseph Jacobs for a few reasons. I appreciated and respected that the main protagonist was a strong female character. When I think of examples of fairy tales, I certainly don’t immediately associate them with a strong female lead. In fact, I usually think the opposite. I immediately picture a helpless woman in need of saving by a man (if a woman is even involved in the story at all). Not only is Molly Whuppie the main female character but she also has her two sisters to look after and take care of after their parents abandoned them in the woods. On multiple occasions she was able to outsmart a strong giant with only herself to rely on. I admire not only Molly Whuppie herself but also Joseph Jacobs for thinking to include such a strong, independent female character in the first place.
