Dear diary:
After mother and I were attacked by the owl, I fell from mommy’s arms and I couldn’t find my mother. Just right before I fell on the ground, I used my legs to crab the branch so I would not fall. It was really cold and I was just really tired. I could feel my limbs slowly loosing their strength, but I still tried to hold on to it for as long as possible just so I could buy mommy more time to rescue me. I waited until the next morning; mommy still hasn’t shown up. I was so exhausted. I hadn’t eaten anything since last night. I could feel that my body is getting weaker, but I was still hoping that mommy would show up sooner or later. While I was thinking, the next thing I knew was that I was falling down. Just when I thought that I was going to die, my head just hit a nest. When I got up, I saw three baby birds. I also saw a mother bird feeding them worms. Ewww, it was so nasty. I would never want to eat those nasty things, ever. I soon finally forgot about the thought since my body could not hold up any longer. I flew to the nest and opened my mouth with my eyes closed as mama bird put a green grasshopper in my mouth. Ughhh, it was so gross. Ever since then, my bat ways were disappearing. I started to act like a bird. I stayed up in the day, ate worms and bugs for lunch, and slept only in the night. Until one day, mama bird decided it was time for us to learn how to fly. Flitter, Fip, and Flap learned to fly as well as I do. I love to fly. I flew and flew until my wings ached me. Oh, god. I didn’t even realized that it was dark already. Mama bird told me that we were not supposed to fly at night time, otherwise, we would crash into trees. So I just had my thumbs hanging on the branch and fell asleep. I was awaken by some bats. They made fun of me sleeping at night and slept with body upside down. I was quite confused. Am I a bat just like them or am I just a bird. Maybe I am a bird but just look differently? I knew how to catch bugs and I thought I was pretty good at it. Mama bird loved me as much as she loved her own children. I didn’t want to leave them or make them feel that I’ve abandoned them. However, being a bat was who I am. I could do matter for being a bat. And now that I have found my mother, I should be with her just to compensate for the times that I wasn’t around. I decided to go with my mother because my roots are with my real family there. It doesn’t matter where I go, I know for sure that I will never forget about my bird family and I will always miss them.
Truly,
Stellaluna
