The Robber Bridegroom is an old Brothers Grimm tale. It essentially tells the story of a woman's intuition. One theme that was significant to me was the idea that women were considered less important than men. Back then, women were basically property to be owned by men. Of course, this still happens in some places in the world today. The bride in The Robber Bridegroom knew her intuition was right about the groom, but because of the way women were treated back then, she did not follow it. Perhaps if women were encouraged to think for themselves, she could have avoided visiting the cannibal lair. In the end, although she could not avoid the whole situation, she made smart decisions. Her intuition told her to watch out for herself. She saved herself and the old woman by following her gut feeling. The bride showed strength unlike what was the norm around the time of this story. For example, I don't think Cinderella would have brought a severed finger to her own wedding!
